Current Commitment to SDG16+
Summary of commitment:
Global Peace and Development Organization (GPDO) is deeply committed to advancing SDG16 by promoting peaceful, inclusive, and just societies across Liberia and the wider West African region. Our work is rooted in the belief that sustainable peace can only be achieved when communities feel empowered, protected, and heard. SDG16 guides our programs, partnerships, and long-term strategy, shaping both what we do and how we do it. Our objectives under SDG16 focus on four core areas: Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention .We work with youth, women, traditional leaders, and local authorities to strengthen dialogue, resolve disputes peacefully, and promote non-violence. Through community forums, mediation initiatives, and peace education, we address the root causes of conflict and strengthen social cohesion. Access to Justice and Human Rights Protection – GPDO raises awareness of legal rights, supports survivors of violence (including SGBV/GBV), and works with justice actors to improve fairness, transparency, and trust in local systems. Inclusive Governance and Civic Participation . We promote accountable leadership, voter education, and public participation in decision-making, ensuring marginalized groups especially women and young people have a voice in governance. Strengthening Institutions Through training, advocacy, and partnership with government, civil society, and communities, we support more transparent, effective, and responsive local institutions. Our work plan integrates SDG16 across all program areas. Each year, we implement community-based peacebuilding initiatives, capacity-building workshops, and advocacy campaigns. We also conduct ongoing community assessments to identify emerging risks, helping us adapt our interventions to shifting realities. Our timeline is both immediate and long-term: we aim for short-term stabilization in fragile communities while laying the groundwork for sustained peace and stronger institutions. Our theory of change is simple but powerful: If communities understand their rights, have opportunities for dialogue, and feel empowered to participate in governance, then they will be better equipped to prevent conflict, demand accountability, and promote peaceful coexistence. Strong, inclusive institutions emerge when local leaders and citizens work together, and when marginalized voices are not only included, but centered. By combining peace education, advocacy, and capacity building, we create enabling environments where justice and peace can thrive. GPDO commitment to SDG16 is not just programmatic, it is organizational. Our values emphasize accountability, cooperation beyond borders, respect for human rights, and service to vulnerable populations. These principles guide our decision-making and define our relationships with partners, communities, and stakeholders. Through this work, GPDO strives to contribute to a Liberia where every person regardless of background can live in peace, trust institutions, and participate fully in shaping their future. SDG16 is both our mandate and our promise, and we are dedicated to advancing it through inclusive, community-driven action.
Organization's priorities and work in relation to commitment:
GPDO work aligns closely with the TAP Network’s mission to strengthen accountability, promote peaceful and inclusive societies, and ensure meaningful civil society engagement in the 2030 Agenda. Much of our programming directly supports SDG16+ by focusing on peacebuilding, human rights protection, transparent governance, and inclusive participation areas central to TAP’s advocacy and collective action. At the community level, GPDO facilitates dialogue, mediation, and civic education to reduce violence, strengthen trust, and build social cohesion. These efforts reflect TAP’s emphasis on localizing SDG16+ and ensuring that communities, especially marginalized groups, play an active role in shaping and monitoring governance processes. On accountability, GPDO conducts awareness campaigns, voter education initiatives, and training on rights and responsibilities for youth, women, and community leaders. We encourage citizens to engage in decision-making and hold institutions accountable. This aligns directly with TAP’s work on civil society-led monitoring, justice, transparency, and open governance. We see ourselves contributing to the TAP Network in several key ways: Sharing community-driven insights from Liberia and West Africa to support TAP’s global advocacy and evidence base on SDG16+ implementation. Participating in collaborative campaigns and policy dialogues that aim to strengthen civic space, protect human rights defenders, and promote transparent, accountable institutions. Engaging in SDG16+ monitoring and reporting, providing local data, case studies, and lived experience that enrich TAP’s global reports, resources, and thematic working groups. Strengthening South–South learning, as our work across rural and post-conflict contexts offers practical lessons on peacebuilding, youth engagement, and inclusive governance that can support peer organizations within the network. Amplifying community voices, ensuring that perspectives from vulnerable groups, survivors of violence, rural women, and marginalized youth are represented in global platforms and SDG16+ accountability processes. By joining the TAP Network, GPDO aims to contribute a grounded, community centered perspective to global efforts to advance SDG16+. We hope to work collaboratively to strengthen accountability mechanisms, expand civic space, and advocate for people-centered governance that truly leaves no one
