Organization mission and work description:

Digihub Africa is a pan-African nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering safe, inclusive, and rights-based digital spaces across the African continent. Our mission is to empower the most vulnerable and underrepresented groups, particularly youth, women, human-rights defenders, and marginalized communities, to learn, claim, and raise awareness of their digital rights while leveraging technology for social good. * Our work focuses on five core pillars: 1. Research & Policy Influence We conduct comprehensive research into how digital technologies shape and influence policymaking across Africa, with a focus on the implications for human rights, defenders, and rural populations. 2. Social Media-Conflict Dynamics & Digital Peacebuilding Recognising the escalating role of social media platforms in exacerbating online hate speech, misinformation, and conflicts (particularly within vulnerable or conflict-affected communities), we investigate how digital content fuels division and propose actionable strategies for civil society, policymakers, and tech platforms to mitigate risks and foster digital peace. 3. Digital Skills & Inclusion We bridge the digital divide by equipping marginalised groups with a strong emphasis on women and girls, with essential digital skills (coding, web development, digital marketing, information literacy. 4. Internet Freedom & Online Safety We strongly advocate for internet freedom across sub-Saharan Africa, combating censorship, harassment, and threats against activists and ordinary citizens, while protecting freedom of expression, privacy, and online safety. 5. Human Rights Awareness & Support Many victims of human-rights abuses lack access to critical resources. We act as a bridge, providing access to professional counseling or partner NGO services through our platforms and hubs, supporting mental health, confidence-building, and digital resilience for those most in need.

Current Commitment to SDG16+

Summary of commitment:

"SDG 16 recognizes that sustainable development cannot be achieved without peace, stability, human rights, and effective governance. It envisions a world where peaceful, just, and inclusive societies can thrive. These principles align closely with Digihub Africa’s mission to promote and defend human rights, particularly digital rights across the African continent by fostering an open, inclusive, and secure digital environment where everyone can participate meaningfully. We advocate for inclusive and rights-based digital governance, ensuring that both policies and technologies respect human rights, promote transparency, and empower citizens rather than silence them. Our work seeks to influence digital policy processes so that Africa’s digital transformation is guided by the principles of justice, accountability, and inclusion. Digihub Africa is firmly committed to advancing SDG 16’s vision of peaceful, just, and inclusive societies through digital-technology–driven interventions across its key strategic focus areas, including: 1. Research on Digital Technology and Policy Influence Digihub Africa conducts comprehensive research on how emerging digital tools and platforms shape policymaking processes, especially their implications for human rights defenders and rural populations. By producing evidence-based insights, the organisation empowers stakeholders to advocate more effectively for justice, transparency, and institutional reform, directly supporting SDG 16 targets on promoting the rule of law and ensuring equal access to justice for all. 2. Impact of Social Media on Conflict Dynamics Recognising the growing influence of digital communication in exacerbating online hate speech, misinformation, and violence, particularly in vulnerable or conflict-affected communities, Digihub Africa works to document how social media content fuels division and tension. Through partnerships with civil society, policymakers, and technology companies, we develop strategies to mitigate digital harms and foster digital peacebuilding, a key element of SDG 16’s commitment to reducing violence, ending abuse, and supporting inclusive and resilient institutions."

Organization's priorities and work in relation to commitment:

"Digihub Africa align with TAP Network’s related to SDG 16 in various areas including: • Digihub Africa’s mission emphasises of advocating for inclusive, rights-based digital governance; combating online hate, misinformation, and censorship; empowering youth and marginalised communities and bridging the digital divide directly supports TAP’s focus on transparency, accountability and participation in digital governance and the broader SDG 16+ agenda. • Our focus area on Research on Digital Technology and Policy Influence (on how emerging digital tools shape policy-making, especially for human rights defenders and rural populations) feeds into TAP’s goal of strengthening civil society’s capacity to monitor, evaluate and engage with institutional processes, essentially enhancing accountability mechanisms and enabling evidence-based advocacy. • Through Digihub Africa focus area on Impact of Social Media on Conflict Dynamics (studying how online content fuels hate, division and violence in vulnerable communities) Digihub Africa contributes to TAP’s interest in leveraging digital tools not only for transparency but for peace, stability and inclusion, core elements of SDG 16+. • With its emphasis on Breaking Gender Barriers, Empowering Through Digital Skills, Advocating for Internet Freedom, and “Human Rights Awareness & Support, Digihub Africa advances TAP’s commitments to ensuring inclusive participation, protecting vulnerable groups, and reinforcing that accountability is meaningful only when all voices , especially marginalised ones are present and active."
