Current Commitment to SDG16+

Summary of commitment:

Hope Behind Bars Africa is committed to the actualisation of SDG 16 by ensuring that every human irrespective of their economic status, race, ethinicity, gender or other differences are able to access justice. We are committed to ensuring that the human rights of people who come in contact with the criminal justice system are respected and ending the mandatory death penalty in Africa is one of our core mandates. More importantly we are committed to using data to hold the government accountable and we hope to achieve all of these by 2030.

Organization's priorities and work in relation to commitment:

Our Strategic Objectives are- 1. To improve access to justice for indigent and marginalized people behind bars. 2. Engage in public interest litigation and enforcement of fundamental human rights of citizens whose rights have been severely violated by the criminal justice system thereby raising the bar on accountability 3. Integrate data mining and innovative technology to acheive our objectives 4. Work with relevant stakeholders to create a sustainable system for legal aid in Nigeria. 5. To ensure that women, children and people living with disabilities are the first recipients of legal aid behind bars. 6. Carry out interventions that aids crime reduction, reduces recidivisim towards upholding peace and security for all. 7. End Mandatory death penalty in Africa.

Organization's work related to TAP network's SGD16+ work & accountability for 2030 Agenda:

One of our core interventions at Hope Behind Bars Africa is Capacity Building of Officers in the Criminal Justice System and other stakeholders towards the effective implementation of human rights legislation that aids access to justice for all while entrenching peace and strong institution. This is in line with TAP Network's work especially in relation to localization of SDG16 and capacity building and Empowerment. In the past, we have partnered with Cornell University on the Death Penalty Worldwide and Accountability Lab to provide capacity building training to young lawyers involved in legal aid work. Recently, we received the confirmation of funding from Namati and Funds for Global Human Rights to carry out legal interventions training for lawyers. In the coming year, Hope Behind Bars Africa will be a focal part of TAP Network's work on capacity building, campaigns and advocacy.

Plan on engaging in TAP's work as a Partner:
