SIDE EVENT INVITATION
Participatory Governance:
Laying the Foundation for a Transformative and Accountable Post-2015 Agenda
hosted by the Transparency, Accountability & Participation (TAP) Network and CIVICUS
When:  Thursday, 21 May 2015, 1:15 – 2:30 PM
Where: CR 13 in UNHQ Conference Building
For the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to meet the ambition of being truly transformative, the SDG follow up and review framework, spanning from the local to the global levels, must be people-centred, inclusive, transparent and participatory. This side event, co-hosted by the Transparency, Accountability and Participation (TAP) Network and CIVICUS will be a timely opportunity to take a deeper dive into the role of participatory governance as a critical enabler to successful implementation of the post-2015 agenda.  The event will focus on participatory governance initiatives at a variety of levels and highlight how they are used to hold decision makers to account for their commitments they make and the actions they take.  The event will also highlight the critical role that citizens and civil society can play in filling data gaps, guiding policy implementation and supporting the monitoring of sustainable development progress.  We will also explore how an enabling environment for effective participatory governance can be established at the national, regional and global levels in the context of the SDGs. The side event will bring together those working on participatory governance from Member States, civil society and the UN system and foster and encourage discussion and exchange between the audience and the panel.
